Agenția de presă a guvernului israelian a anunțat, miercuri dimineața, decesul celui care a fost Shimon Peres, președinte al Israelului între 2007 și 2014.
Politician de carieră, Shimon Peres a fost o personalitate marcantă a Israelului încă de la înființarea acestui stat în 1948. A fost, printre altele, de două ori prim-ministru și de două ori prim-ministru interimar.
Rămâne în memorie ca un militant al păcii. De altfel, a primit și premiul Nobel pentru Pace în 1994, alături de Yitzhak Rabin și de liderul palestinian Yasser Arafat.
S-a retras din funcția de președinte al Israelului în 2014, la vârsta de 91 de ani, dar a rămas activ prin intermediul Centrului Peres pentru pace, organizație care militează în favoarea coexistenței în pace între evrei și arabi.
În urmă cu două săptămâni, Shimon Peres a suferit un masiv accident vascular cerebral. De atunci a fost internat, iar marți seara starea sa s-a agravat, în noaptea de marți spre miercuri constatându-se și decesul.
