Iulian Gherguț, responsabil cu securitatea la mina de mangan din Tambao (Burkina Faso), a fost răpit în 2015 de jihadiști din gruparea Al Mourabitoune.
Gherguț a fost răpit de indivizi înarmați, alături de alți muncitori străini. Ulterior, au apărut informații conform cărora românul a fost cedat grupării Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen, aripa Al Qaeda din Mali.
Teodor Meleșcanu, ministrul Afacerilor Externe, a oferit marți noi detalii despre românul răpit în Burkina Faso în urmă cu trei ani.
Meleșcanu susține că la nivelul MAE există în continuare o Celulă de criză ce gestionează această problemă și că membrii acestei celule poartă discuții permanente cu autoritățile din Burkina Faso, Mali, Algeria și Nigeria.
Totuși, Meleșcanu spune că situația este extrem de complicată în condițiile în care jihadiștii cer o sumă importantă de bani drept răscumpărare, iar în România nu există cadru legal pentru achitarea unei răscumpărări.
Însă Meleșcanu este optimist că în cele din urmă se va găsi soluția ideală pentru recuperarea în viață a cetățeanului român, mai ales că se menține în permanență legătura și cu Frank Timiș, afaceristul pentru care lucra Gherguț în momentul în care a fost răpit.
